Background of the study
Volunteerism plays a crucial role in fostering social capital by building networks, trust, and civic engagement within communities. In Abuja, volunteer initiatives have become a vital mechanism for addressing social challenges and promoting community development. Volunteers not only provide essential services in education, health, and disaster management but also bridge gaps between government and civil society, thereby reinforcing communal ties and enhancing social capital (Chinaza, 2023). The concept of social capital emphasizes the value of networks and the mutual benefits derived from shared community values. In Abuja, numerous volunteer programs have emerged in response to urban challenges, ranging from youth mentorship and environmental conservation to community health outreach. These programs have led to increased civic participation and stronger interpersonal relationships among residents, contributing to a resilient social fabric. However, the sustainability and effectiveness of volunteerism in generating social capital require critical evaluation. Emerging studies indicate that while volunteerism has the potential to create substantial social benefits, its impact may vary due to factors such as organizational structure, resource availability, and community engagement levels (Emeka, 2024). This study seeks to appraise how volunteerism enhances social capital in Abuja by examining its roles, benefits, and challenges. By integrating quantitative and qualitative data, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms through which volunteerism builds social networks and fosters trust in urban settings.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized potential of volunteerism to enhance social capital in Abuja, there is limited empirical evidence on the extent of its impact on community cohesion and civic engagement. Many volunteer initiatives operate without structured evaluation methods, leading to inconsistencies in measuring outcomes. Moreover, factors such as insufficient funding, lack of formal training, and bureaucratic constraints may hinder the effective mobilization and retention of volunteers. These challenges raise concerns about the sustainability of volunteer-driven social capital in addressing community needs (Ibrahim, 2023). Without a clear understanding of these obstacles, policy-makers and community leaders may struggle to design effective interventions. Thus, this study aims to critically assess the impact of volunteerism on social capital in Abuja and to identify key challenges that limit its effectiveness, with a view to proposing actionable strategies for improvement.
